President of the ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, has presented the Commission’s workplan for the year 2023 to the ECOWAS Parliament at the ongoing first Ordinary Session of the parliament holding in Abuja touching on myriad of problems confronting the community.

Article 32 of the Supplementary Act enhancing powers of the ECOWAS parliament, mandates the President of the ECOWAS Commission, to present a general report on the state of implementation of the community’s work plan twice a year.

 

Presenting the first community report for the year under review, Touray, counted activities undertaken by the Commission to ensure growth in the sub-region to include: improving economic and monetary union, deploying the right infrastructure to address deficit in the community and building bridges and connections necessary for the socio-economic integration of the region.

The President however raised concerns for the about twenty-nine point five million people that need emergency food and nutritional assistance notwithstanding the good production of food saying that if appropriate measures are not taken, the figure could rise to forty-two point five million people between June and August 2023.

This report was followed by reactions from Parliamentarians who commended, flayed or made suggestions on the way forward.

 

In her response to some of the issues raised by Parliamentarians, the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mrs. Damtien Tchintchibidja, harped on the need for member states to work together for effective regional integration.

The 2023 first Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Parliament continues till the 26th of this month.
