Indigenes of Awka both at home and in the diaspora, converged on the Olulu Imo Awka, to celebrate the 2023 Egwu Imo Awka festival.

 

 

that the festival was characterized by various activities including masquerading, visit to Umuokpu Awka, eating of tapioca with coconuts, eating ji avulu and onugbu soup and other delicacies.

The age long celebration which the Awka people are known for is an annual event that every onye Awka looks forward to.

 

Speaking during the event, the Chairman Egwu Imo Awka 2023 Organizing Committee, Mr. Anayo Obiakor said the celebration is a period of coming together, make acquaintances with those they have not seen for sometime and a time to make merry.

Mr. Anayo said the celebration is not a time to cause trouble but a time to expose strength and youthful aura, regretting that some youths have change the celebration from its original demeanor.

 

In his remark, a stakeholder in the community, Chief Emeka Nwosu explained that the festival unifies the Awka people both at home and in diaspora in an atmosphere of happiness while promoting culture noting that a special kind of black monkey is sacred to Awka.

A Youth leader in Awka, Chief Nwokoye Nwosu described the event as a joyful celebration, praying for peace and progress in Awka community.

 

Messrs Emenike Anaekwe and Patrick Anikpe advised Ndi Igbo not to degrade their culture or regard it as fetish while exalting western culture.

 

Ndi Ozo Awka displayed their dancing skills as they danced to the Egwu Ufvio, as different individuals, groups and villages trooped to the ‘olulu imoka’ at Nkwo Amaenyi to pay homage.
