The ever-busy Fegge Community in Onitsha South Council Area, stood still as the Dean, Church of Nigeria, Most Reverend Ali Buba Lamido, the Bishop on the Niger, Right Reverend Owen Nwokolo, visiting bishops, the clergy, and delegates convoy arrived St. John’s Anglican Church, Fegge, Onitsha South Archdeaconry for the Second Session of the 32nd Synod, of Diocese on the Niger, with theme, “Feed My Lambs”.
The Boys and Girls Brigade of the Diocese, saluted the bishops in a special presentation at the Bishop’s Court Onitsha.
Bishop Nwokolo, his wife, Dr. Elsie and other bishops were warmly received and decorated at the entrance of St. John’s Church, and as the parishioners waved the diocesan hand flags to welcome them, Bishop Nwokolo inspected the guard of honour mounted by Onitsha South Archdeaconry Boys Brigade .
In a sermon during the service to mark the beginning of the Synod, the Bishop of Mbamili Diocese, Right Reverend Obiora Uzochukwu, who spoke on the theme, “A Call to Greater Service” said this is the time for Christians to be propelled by love and show more commitment in working for God.
Right Reverend Uzochukwu urged believers to stop murmuring and criticising everything done in the church, and do more for God.
Bishop Nwokolo later prayed and blessed people living in Fegge Community, and urged them to toe the path of peace.
In an interview, the Chancellor of the Diocese and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Sir Nnamdi Ibegbu, said this year’s synod came with many blessings for the Diocese as the University on the Niger has gotten full approval from the NUC among other achievements while, a Bishop nominee, Dr. Vivian Onwuekwe, expects that the theme of the synod will inspire people to assist the less privileged ones considering the economic situation of the country.
Six churches including St. Faith, Church of the Holy Spirit, St Barnabas, Anglican church of the Pentecost, St John’s and New Life Church make up Onitsha South Archdeaconry.
Thanksgiving and special renditions from the central choir, climaxed the opening ceremony.
