Wife of the governor of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has advocated increased awareness, funding and positive actions on the rights of children, especially for those challenged by poverty and crisis.

Mrs. Soludo, who stated this in a statement in Awka to commemorate the 2023 International Day of the African Child, affirmed that investment in education is paramount to the future of every child, not just as their basic right but as an important factor for the development of any society.

The governor’s wife, while explaining that the International Day of the African Child promotes education for all children, which can help break the cycle of poverty and improve people’s lives for generations to come, said it is also important to guarantee every child an environment that is safe from social hindrances like sexual and domestic abuses, drug use and alcoholism, child labour, trafficking, and early marriage, among others.

She further noted that by raising awareness about critical issues that affect children, governments and individuals are encouraged to take better actions to protect and promote rights of every child, while adults must also see it as a responsibility to create stable society for all children.

Dr Mrs. Soludo, who is a child rights advocate, also called on those with the means to always show support to the future of children around them, through, donations, charities and investments in education.

She explained that it is important to constantly celebrate and recognize the accomplishments of children, in order to inspire them more and to also motivate other children, and warned parents against unhealthy preferential treatments toward their children.

The governor’s wife, who noted that the present administration is making well articulated policies that prioritize the social, economic and educational welfare of every child in the state, stressed that children occupy an integral space in the new Anambra Project of the present government.

International Day of the African Child, commemorated on June sixteen every year to celebrate the uniqueness and accomplishments of children in Africa, has “The Rights of the Child in the Digital Environment” as year 2023 theme.
