As a means of empowering the less privileged in the society through increasing health care access, John and Lucy Umenwa foundation, a non-governmental organization, has donated medical equipment and drugs worth two million naira to the three primary health care centres in Igbo-Ukwu community, Aguata Council Area.

Obiuno, Ngo and Ihite Primary Health Care Centres are the three beneficiaries of the foundation’s generosity while the distribution of the drugs and equipment took place at Ngo Primary Health Care Centre.

 

the foundation is a brainchild of the children of late John Umenwa and his wife Lucy of Igbo-Ukwu town as a way of immortalizing their parents.

The Foundation, supported by Geneith Pharmaceuticals Limited, started about two years ago with the registration of twenty-three persons from Umeasiegbu family in Ngo village Igbo-Ukwu under, Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, ASHIA.

Speaking while presenting the medical items to the primary healthcare centres, the Chairman and Vice-chairman of Geneith Pharmaceuticals, Mr. Emmanuel and Chief Godwin Umenwa respectively represented by Pharmacist Nwamaka Nzewi, said the succour was a way to give back to their community, through assisting the less privileged, assuring to sustain the tempo on annual basis.

According to the Coordinator of the Foundation, Professor Fabian Okafor, the medical equipment and drugs donated to the Primary Health Care Centres worth over two million naira, adding that it will assist in no small measure in providing quality medical health services to residents of the community.

 

He stressed that the foundation is using the opportunity to answer the clarion call by government for public-private partnership in the provision of social amenities in the state, calling for its judicious use to serve the interest of those patronizing the primary health care centres.

A stakeholder in Igbo-Ukwu community, Mr. David Umeh, extolled the gesture of the Children of Late John and Lucy Umenwa for remembering their community through increasing health care access and called on other illustrious sons and daughters to emulate them, while the Chairman of Ihite Progressive Union, Igbo-Ukwu, Mr. Ifeanyi Onyeka, assured to set up a committee to ensure that the drugs donated are not being sold to patients.

 

Thanking the foundation on behalf of the three primary healthcare centres, the Officer incharge of Ihite Primary Health Care Centre, Mrs Uju Osegbo, pledged to use the drugs and equipment freely on patients as expected.
