A bill for a law to establish the Anambra State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission has scaled second reading on the floor of Anambra State House of Assembly.

 

The bill sponsored by the member representing Ogbaru One Constituency, Honourable Noble Igwe, seeks to provide for an organized management and administrative structure for an effective use of the fifty percent or any increase percentage of the thirteen percent Oil Derivation Fund accruing to Anambra State Government for the purpose of tackling the under development and ecological problems that may arise from the exploration of oil minerals in the Oil and Gas Producing Areas of Anambra State.

In his contribution, the member representing Njikoka Constituency One, Honourable Chidi Ibemeka who noted that the bill will sort out social problems of oil producing communities, added that it also empowered the Commission to liaise with the relevant Federal and State authorities as well as oil prospecting and producing companies on the control and effective methods of tackling oil pollution, spillages, and other ecological environmental problems in the oil producing areas of the state.

In their contributions, the member representing Nnewi South One Constituency, Honourable Nonso Atuchukwu and the member for Anaocha One Constituency, Honourable Nkechi Ogbuefi said that the establishment of the Commission will lay a very good framework for the commencement of oil exploration in the state and called for expeditious passage of the bill.

 

On his part, the member representing Awka South Constituency One, Honourable Henry Mbachu remarked that the establishment of Oil Producing Areas Development Commission, effective use of fifty percent of the Oil Derivation Fund accruing to Anambra State is a process of rewarding the people who own the oil.
