Anambra state Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim has restated the commitment of Professor Chukwuma Soludo led administration towards ensuring that no life will be lost to this year’s flooding in Anambra.
The Deputy Governor stated this during a meeting with the state’s Flood Response Committee at the Government House in Awka.
Deputy Governor Ibezim said that the state government has concluded plans on how to ensure the wellbeing and safety of those in riverine communities in the state during the flooding, including provision of Holding Centres among other things.
Dr Ibezim asked stakeholders and Transition Committee Chairmen of the flood prone local government areas in the state including Ayamelum, Anambra East and West, Ogbaru, Awka North, and others, to intensify effort in sensitizing their people on the need to relocate to Holding Centres for safety when the expected flooding starts, emphasizing on the need for the people in the riverine communities to understand that properties lost to the flooding can be replaced but life has no replacement.
For the Chairman Anambra State Emergency Management Agency, Chief Paul Odenigbo the agency is ready to assist the state government in ensuring the wellbeing and safety of those in Holding Centres across the flood prone local government areas of the state during the flooding, even as he encouraged well to do individuals and groups to start coming forward with their supports for the would be victims of the flooding.
In separate interviews, the Transition Committee Chairman for Awka North, Mr ThankGod Anago, and his Anambra West counterpart, Mr Felix Ikechi said that they are already working tirelessly to make sure that no life will be lost in their various council areas during the flooding, and promised to take the safety sensitization campaign to churches, markets and other public places as directed by the Deputy Governor Dr Ibezim.
