As the world marks this year’s International Day of Democracy, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze says the three cardinal functions of legislation, effective representation and oversight of the legislature have actively promoted democracy and good governance.
In his message to mark the day, Right Honourable Udeze maintained that democracy is not a luxury but a fundamental requirement for sustainable development.
The Speaker who noted that the International Day of Democracy is a day to evaluate the strength of democracy across the globe, stressed the need for various governments to give democracy a chance to thrive by creating an enabling environment for the masses to contribute to good governance and reap the benefits.
He paid glowing tribute to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for enthroning participatory democracy in the state especially by ensuring that his massive road construction among other projects is extended to all the local government areas in the state in order to give those in the hinterlands a sense of belonging.
Right Honourable. Udeze used the occasion of this year’s International Day of Democracy to commend the State lawmakers for their efforts towards involving their constituents in their programmes and development agenda to enhance their standard living.
