The Chemical Society of Nigeria, CSN, has ended its forty-sixth annual international conference, workshop and exhibition; with a call for a government-approved recycling agency or company to be developed or set up for waste management.

 

The weeklong event held in Awka had six plenary sessions, technical sessions, investiture of new fellows, awards and dinner night, as well as inauguration of new executives.

 

It attracted over seven hundred members of the society who participated either physically or virtually.

The Chairman, Communique Drafting Committee, Professor Joseph Lori, while reading out the communique, said that the conference, among other things, recommended that Nigeria Education Curriculum should be reviewed for industrial development and translational research, and to include special courses and programmes to make Chemistry the first course of choice.

The communique also recommended that the Chemistry Society of Nigeria and other sister associations should synergize and relate with the federal government of Nigeria through the federal ministries of health, science and technology and innovation to create awareness on prevalence, hazards and management of industrial and domestic wastes.

 

In his remarks, the outgoing National President of Chemistry Society of Nigeria, Professor Nkem Chendo, thanked God for yet another opportunity offered members to congratulate the fellow-elects of the fellowship of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, and reminded the fellow-elects that as elders and pillars of the society, they have attained revered position that requires their contributions in giving the society needed direction and support.

Presenting certificate of return to the new executives, the Chairman of Electoral Committee of CSN, Dr. Friday Okei, explained that they now have legal backing to steer the affairs of the society after the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing executive

 

During the awards presentation, the Chairman of Awards Committee of CSN, Professor Alfred Onneh, said it is a tradition in the society to recognize qualified and deserving members of the society.

One of the awardees and member of Local Organizing Committee of the conference, Dr Sunny Nwachukwu, commended all who worked round the clock for the success of the programme.

 

Professor Rufus Shatu is the National President-elect of CSN, while his deputy is Professor Peter Ibiyemi.

 

The event attracted many dignitaries, including Professor Sunday Okeniyi, Professor Gloria Obuzo, who is the first female national President of CSN, Professor Kingsley Nwozor, among others.
