Governor Chukwuma Soludo has called on the Nigerian Legion to join hands in the fight against insecurity in the country.

 

Governor Soludo represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr Ernest Ezeajughi made the call at the Nigerian Legion, Anambra State Council 2023 Celebration Day held at the Professor Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre in Awka.

Governor Soludo pointed out that the day is to recognize the importance of the Nigerian Legion, their contributions to the security of Nigeria and Anambra State.

 

He disclosed various packages of his administration for the State which include revamping of the State health and education sectors, massive roads construction, erosion control initiative, revolution in the agricultural sector through distribution of palm and coconut seedlings, subsidy removal palliatives and promised to put the challenges of the legion into consideration.

The Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtoochukwu Udeze represented by the member representing Aguata Constituency One, Mr Anayo Okpalaeke noted that the history of the Legion will never be forgotten and encouraged them not to relent in their efforts even as he assured that the legislature will continue to assist the Nigerian Legion in any area, they needed help.

In his opening remarks, the Chairman on the occasion Retired Wing Commander Joe Anyika asked the veterans to continue in the spirit of discipline which they are known for as he said that God will keep taking them higher in life.

 

He appreciated the widows, and dependents of the fallen heroes as well as Governor Soludo for what has done for the veterans and appealed to him to do more.

In his address, the Chairman, Nigerian Legion, Anambra State council, Dr Ben Ezeagbogu who gave historical background about the Legion, said that only duly retired or discharged officers and soldiers are eligible to be members.

 

The event had in attendance retired and active military men and women, widows and dependents of the fallen heroes, political appointees and traditional ruler of Omasi, Igwe Ben Okeji, among others.

It featured empowerment of widows of the fallen heroes and award presentation.

 

The Nigerian Legion Day Celebration is an annual event set aside to honour military veterans, ex-servicemen, dead or alive for their meritorious service and sacrifice to the nation.
