The panel of judges of Sunugude, an Igbo short story competition for secondary schools has announced winners of the maiden edition.
Sụgụnụde, an acronym for “Suba”, “Gụba”, “Nụba” ma “Debe” Igbo, is an Igbo Short Story Competition organized by the Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS in collaboration with Ozioma Igbo and OCI Foundation to help inculcate the right attitude towards speaking, reading, hearing and writing Igbo language.
Participating schools were drawn from secondary school students from the three senatorial districts of the State.
According to the panel, Chibuzor Okoli of Christ the King Secondary School Otolo Nnewi took the first position for Anambra South Senatorial District with seventy-nine-point three -three percent followed by Chiemerie Molokwu of Mothers of Mercy Secondary School, Azigbo who came second with seventy-seven-point – one- six percent while Amarachi Nnadi from Saint Augustine’s College, Mbosi came third with seventy-four-point six-six percent.
For Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chidinma Anumba of Saint Mary’s College, Awka came first with eighty-five-point eight -three percent while Chinecherem Oriya of Capital City Secondary School, Awka came second with eighty-two-point five percent and they were trailed by Ekenechukwu Okonkwo of Saint Patrick’s College, Awka on the third position with eighty-two-point – one – six percent.
The panel announced that Kosisochukwu Olisekwe of Saint John D’Apostle Secondary School, Odakpu Onitsha took the first position with seventy-nine point six-six percent for Anambra North Senatorial District, Ngozi Ezeaka of the same school came second with seventy-seven-point five percent and Chikamso Onyeisi of the Infant Jesus School, Fegge Onitsha came third with seventy-six-point three-three percent.
The panel of judges led by Mrs Nonye Nwokoye of the Programmes Department of ABS explained that the criteria for assessment of the competition were laid down and presented to all the participants and the judges followed through the process by monitoring and examining each of the contestants.
Another member of the panel of judges, Mr Anthony Ugochukwu, who is an Igbo Presenter on ABS explained that the competition will encourage and sensitize Ndi Igbo of the importance of their language and culture.
Contributing, a representative of Ozioma Igbo, Mr Maxwell Agulla said that it is a thing of joy to speak one’s language and advised those who are ashamed to speak Igbo language to have a rethink.
The date for the presentation of awards to the winners will soon be announced.
