Anambra State Government has sealed off Dvora Hostel situated in Igbariam, Anambra East Local Government Area for suspicions that the integrity of the building might be compromised.

The state government through the Anambra State Physical Planning Board carried out the exercise after a video of the structure surfaced online.

The Chairman of the Board, Barrister Chike Maduekwe said that in the meantime, the building has been evacuated, while the Engineer who built the structure has been directed to approach the state Material Testing Laboratory to conduct several mandatory tests before today Tuesday fourteenth November, 2023.

Barrister Maduekwe further revealed that prior to any test, the developer was also asked to ensure that the building is supported by steel props to allow technical staff from the laboratory to assess the building safely.

He pointed out that the tests to be carried out include burrowing, geo-technical test for sub-soil and foundation, structural and integrity test, non-destructive test, structural frame analysis review to check existing frame sustainability, emphasizing that at the end, the result will determine whether the building will continue to stand or be completely demolished.

While commending the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Professor Greg Nwakoby and the school management for their prompt response for what could have been a disaster by ensuring that the students of the school who were resident in the hostel were evacuated immediately the signs became visible, Barrister Maduekwe said that they are working with the school authority to ensure that the situation is managed appropriately.

He assured parents and members of the public that the matter is under control as they are working in an expedited manner to mitigate any challenge that may arise from the problem.
