Like the popular adage that “Rome was not built in a day,” the making of a clean, green, livable, and smart mega Anambra will not happen in a day.

To this end, the forestry department of Anambra State Ministry of Environment has commenced grassing and tree planting at the new Government House, Awka aimed at protecting the land from erosion and other environmental problems.

Grasses planted in the area include port-harcourt, fescue, vertiva, and jathropa.

According to the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Felix Odimegwu, the environment remains one of the topmost priorities in Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s development vision.

Engineer Odimegwu said that they started off with a natural bioremediation, which has helped to restore the site to a relatively clean, non-toxic environment after which they began the planting of the aforementioned grasses.

The Environment Commissioner added that the grasses will not only prevent future erosion re-occurance but will also beautify and curb excess greenhouse gases in the atmosphere even as he urged Ndi Anambra to help safeguard the environment by planting trees and grasses in their homes, offices and business areas, as this will help flood control, clean air, trap storm water and pollutants, among others.
