Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, has joined its counterpart nationwide to commemorate this year’s African Road Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

 

It is a global event held every 3rd Sunday in November aimed at sensitizing the public on the importance of road safety and to honor victims of road crashes including those who lost their lives and the survivors.

The celebration began with a thanksgiving service at the Cathedral Church of St. Faith Awka, which attracted the regular and special marshals of the Corps, and sister agencies.

 

In a sermon, the Archbishop, Province of the Niger and Bishop of Awka Anglican Diocese, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, who spoke through the Archdeacon in the Cathedral, Venerable Samuel Okonkwo, commended the FRSC for honouring victims of road crashes and congratulated them on the 2023, African Road Safety Day.

Archbishop Ibezim, described the FRSC as an organization with integrity and respect, and charged them to go back to shun bribery, backbiting, rancor and restore the dignity they were known for when the agency was created.

 

He used the opportunity to ask Christians to take cognizance of the enemy’s tricks and equip themselves with God provisions and be prayerful.

Also speaking, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Dauda Ali Biu who spoke through State Sector Commander of the Corps, Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, disclosed that annually about one point three million people are victims of road crashes which sadly is the leading cause of death for children and adult of five to twenty-nine years.

 

He called on governments, non-governmental organizations, stakeholders and the general public to evolve strategies such as redesigning dangerous roads, enforcing speed limits, improving vehicle designs and all components that make the road safe for users.

The Anambra State Coordinator of the Special Marshal, Mr. Patrick Esumai urged drivers to drive carefully, to avoid being victims of road crashes.

 

Presents at the event were the Assistant Comptroller of Nigerian Correctional Service, Anambra Command, Mrs. Njideka Anazor, Deputy Comptroller Immigration Anambra State, Mrs. Mercy Anumba, among others.
