The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Anambra State Command has advised corps members to abstain from drug abuse and trafficking as they move to their host communities after orientation course.
The Head of NDLEA, NYSC Orientation Camp, Anambra, Mr. Charles Erih, gave the charge, during a one-day lecture on drug abuse and trafficking for the 2023 Batch C Stream two corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Anambra State.
Mr. Erih defined drug as any substance that reacts positively or negatively in the body and capable of affecting human metabolism.
He further explained that drug trafficking is a global black market for the manufacture and distribution of prohibited drugs.
Mr. Erih noted that drug abuse includes intake of anabolic steroids, synthetic drugs, hallucinogens, alcohol, stimulants, cannabis, depressants, and narcotics.
He warned that NDLEA is uncompromising in investigating suspected peddlers as well as consumers of illicit drugs, even as he warned that it is harmful to humans and the society.
The NDLEA official also explained that the different stages of drug abuse are experimental, occasional, regular, dependent and addictive.
While listing the effects of drug abuse as anxiety, depression, memory loss, little or no decision-making if one persists in its intake, Mr Erih stressed the need for early education on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
