Ndi Igbariam in Anambra East Council Area of Anambra State have re-elected Dr Chris Offorkansi as the President General of Igbariam Progressive Union.
The election which followed the expiration of his first tenure which lasted for two years was held at the end of the town’s general meeting at Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church field, Igbariam.
The election conducted with option A4 attracted Ndi Ichie, Onosolu Ndi Ichie, Ndi Ojiana, Irunabo, youths and clergymen.
It was monitored by members of Anambra State Association of Town Unions led by its National Vice President, Professor Charles Nwadigwe and representatives of Anambra State Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs.
Dr Offorkansi polled four hundred and sixty-eight votes against his opponent, Barrister Emeka Atuanya who got thirty-three votes.
Addressing the community after the election, the member representing Anambra East at the State House of Assembly, Barrister Obi Nweke who is an indigene of the community, said Ndi Igbariam have spoken with one voice through election which he described as peaceful, free, fair and credible.
He noted that they do not have another community to call home except Igbariam and called on every member of the community to share brotherly love while they give support and assistance to the new executive, commending Dr Offorkansi for the transformations he instituted in the community in his first tenure.
Reacting after observing the election, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr TonyCollins Nwabunwanne who was represented by a staff of the Ministry, Comrade Henry Nwasike describe the election as very peaceful and called on Dr Oforkansi and his executive to carry everyone along to drive development in the community.
Also speaking, the Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra East, Dr Anselm Onuora charged Ndị Igbariam to maintain peace and order and key into the Professor Chukwuma Soludo administration’s agenda geared towards the development of communities.
In his reaction, a stakeholder in the community, Chief Lawrence Anikpe, advised members of the community to support the new executive so they could achieve their lofty dreams for the community.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Offorkansi said his administration will be driven by the “Onye Aghana Nwanneya” mantra and urged members of the community to always be united to achieve the dreams they have for the community.
The newly elected executive committee are Dr Chris Oforkansi, President General, Nwaogugu Onyekwunive, Vice President, Emeka Nwolisa-Secretary General and Uche Akubeze-Assistant Secretary.
Others are Chikwado Okeke-Treasurer, Paul Iloegbune-PRO, Emeka Akwuba-Financial Secretary, Anthony Emenike-Publicity Secretary, Emeka Akwobi-Provost One, Uderike Christian-Provost Two, Barrister Nnamdi Makolu-Legal Adviser, Goddy Oreeh-Auditor and Ignatius Ozemene Provost Three.
