Women have been urged to sustain campaigns and sensitization against abuse and exploitation of the girl child.
The Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare Mrs Ify Obinabo made the call at inauguration of Mrs Ifeoma Nwokedi as the President General of Women Wing of Achalla Improvement Union, launching of the Union’s Sienna car, solar lights initiative and end of year children’s forum.
Paul Ezeoke reports that Mrs Obinabo said women as agents of change should strive to impact positively on the mindset and perception of their husbands and male children of the female gender and cautioned against giving the male child undue advantage over the girl child.
She urged parents to always give equal opportunities to their children to discourage male child from cultivating superiority complex that undermine the personality of the girl child, which she regretted often lead to bullying and violence that escalate domestic abuses and instability in families.
The Commissioner called for collective efforts to build a new social order and protect the future of children as well as provide conducive environment for them to attain their full potential in the society.
In his remarks, the Traditional Ruler of the community, Igwe Sunny Nwokedi expressed satisfaction with the initiatives of the new leadership and prayed for more divine inspirations.
The Chairman of the occasion, Prince Charles Nnadi said women should be encouraged to contribute to community development.
Responding, the new President Mrs Nwokedi thanked the community for the confidence reposed in her and assured that she would continue to initiate projects and programmes for development of the community to further uplift the life of the people.
The event featured songs by widows and children as well as other side attractions.
